Recycling plastics into playtime

0:08

Unknown: Big Beaver Elementary is a small school in western

0:12

Pennsylvania. We have a very diverse group of students. The

0:16

staff here Big Beaver elementary really takes the time and effort

0:21

that is needed to meet all the students needs that we have in

0:24

this building. We're always working on trying to improve the

0:28

education that the students are getting every year. And I was

0:32

contacted by Beaver Valley Waste Management to see if we wanted

0:37

to participate in a plastics recycling program.

[Text appears]

Students across Beaver County learned to recycle through a Shell Polymers funded program.

0:43

It was an idea that was just off the wall. How do we teach kids

0:46

really concrete ideas about recycling and make it real to

0:50

Them?

The students collected over 100 bags of plastic and were rewarded with a new basketball court made with recycled, plastic enhanced asphalt.

0:53

The best part was just seeing them. I can recycle this. I

0:57

can't recycle that. And then see the fruits of their collection.

1:02

Being able to put a basketball court out there.

1:05

Congratulations, you guys did a great job on bringing recyclable

1:09

products and you're gonna play on it. I think it's a beautiful

1:12

basketball court. And most important, the kids know that

1:15

recycling can benefit the environment and it can benefit

1:19

them directly.
